[OVER VARIOUS COMPETITORS' PDAS, EXCLUDING GENSOKYO RESIDENTS]

All right, competitors. We will be fighting against each other in the ring, but until that moment, I am still your ally, and I wish to see you all fighting your best. Therefore, I am offering a quick crash course in creating and using your own spellcards. I would highly recommend taking this, as I will not be offering an other opportunity. Feel free to swing by the Simulation Chamber in the next few hours, and I will do what I can.

One competitor, at least, has already joined up; Kitaro can be seeing trying out some patterns, though they're still obviously not very high quality. Observers might note he's slightly tense around Ran, though Ran is doing her best in spite of it as far as coaching him.

"Hey there!" Have a Hedgehog, Ran. Sonic saunters in with a grin, and only pauses for a millisecond when he sees that she's a multi-tailed fox-girl. Huh.

"...I figured out how to use danmaku not long ago, but the spellcard thing... I'm still a little fuzzy on. So I'm glad you offered! How does it work?"

A hedgehog youkai! Interesting.

It's relatively simple. You design a unique attack of your own, which you activate by using the card. You may only use it once per battle, but it will enhance your abilities for the duration, or until someone "spell breaks" you -- ah, that's when you lose too much concentration to maintain it, usually due to someone hitting you too much. You are advised to ensure the card covers as much area around you as possible, but it is in good manners to allow the opponent some margin of maneuverability. Make sense so far?

"Yup! It's no fun if you don't give the other guy some kind of chance!" He adds, nodding. He hops into the test chamber in a speedy curled-up blue ball and lands on his feet. "Time to see if I can put the theory to practice..."

It might be worth noting that once the Gensokyo field gets a hold of him, the hedgehog youkai looks very different. "Here we go!"

He throws some bullets, experiments with a spin or two (It throws off quills! Awesome.) then tries charging. A spellcard-length charge unleashes a high-speed danmaku clump that speeds away and leaves a trail of smaller blossoming danmaku shockwaves in its wake.

"Whoa, cool!"

Very nice! You seem to be getting the hang of it quite quickly. So speed is your strength?

"Oh yeah." The yokai'd hedgehog grins as he floats in the air and jerks a thumb at himself. "World's fastest Hedgehog! Breakin' the sound barrier on foot since I was a kid! 'S why my name is Sonic!

"Does an area of strength make a difference here? And by the way... what's your name? I forgot to ask."

Well, it's something you should try to center your attacks around. A lot of youkai, for instance, have certain themes to their attacks. Mine involves shikigami; my master's involves boundaries. If you focus around things like this, it helps you to develop a distinctive set.

"Well, speed is my middle name!" Actually it isn't. It's Maurice. But he's not about to let THAT get out anytime soon. "Making up a set centered around it should be noooo problem!"

A bit more experimentation, a few more shockwaves, some orbiting danmaku designs, higher and higher charging and eventually his design takes the shape of a large multicolored seven-vector seal that blurs into a dizzying spin and throws out a mess of white scattershot in all directions. He quits the spell quickly though; it's a bit much, even for him.

"That... is AWESOME! Man, I'm gonna be really sorry if I don't get to use all of these!" He says between tired breaths.

Hmm, well don't push yourself too hard. If you wear yourself out too fast, it'll end fast too.

"Yeah, but no one gets better at anything if they don't push themselves at least a little bit." He counters, though he lowers himself to the ground anyway. She had a point.

"So you're... a fox yokai, right?" He says, loping past her to the control panel to turn off the world simulator and regain his familiar--albiet somewhat shorter--self again.

One stretch-and-snap of reality later and he's back to normal once again.

"I know a little bit about them. Spent some time talking to Meiling and Peach--uhh, Tenshi. Thing I've noticed is, yeah we look different but yokai and mobians are kinda similar in a lot of ways... I even know a fox-boy that has a couple of tails himself." He adds with a grin.

*sigh* Again with Tenshi. She's making herself known, at least...

Ah, he has two tails, does he? Ah... it isn't... the result of pollution, is it?

"Huh? Not that I ever heard, though I never really took the time to look it up... where'd you get that idea?"

Ah, simply something someone else told me. That is a relief. Sounds like the boy's on his way to enlightenment, then! He'll grow another tail for every hundred years or so.

"W-huh? Every hundred years?! Does that mean you're... seveneightnine-- almost a thousand years old!?"

You'll have to forgive him Ran, for staring at your tails like that. It's just that it's kind of hard to keep count when they all move like that.

"Wow... Looks like there is one difference; People don't ususally live that long in my world. But that's no big thing... I dunno about actual enlightenment, but Tails is still really smart for his age." He seems proud of this fact.

That makes about as much sense as anything. And, well, he could surprise you. But intelligence when young is a fine thing as well.

He crosses his arms, foot tapping thoughtfully on the chamber floor.

"Actually... There are plenty of times when he's surprised me already; there are points when he has an sharper grasp on a situation than anyone else there. He's just... good at looking at things and seeing what's really going on, I guess. So maybe you've got a point!" He adds with a smile. "Anyway, if he starts growing another tail I know I'll be the first one to hear about it.

"So... who's your master? Can I ask?"

My Master is Lady Yukari. I believe you may know her as a Councilor here?

"I think I've heard of Lady Yukari, but I don't believe we've met." He says, headtilting slightly as he looks up at her. "Do you like working with her?"
